Weekly, Saturday and Sunday Art Classes in Sefton

LEARN TO PAINT IN SEFTON

If you’re interested in joining a weekly, or monthly, art class, whether you’re a complete beginner or someone with more experience seeking to improve, then please contact us for more information.

It’s best to contact us quickly if you’re interested. We are currently taking names for the next intake of beginners, as well as those with previous experience wanting to improve their technique.

Next enrolment for those with previous experience, early September. For complete beginners wanting either monthly or weekly classes, you would start October 2025. If you are interested, please contact us promptly, as there are limited places available for beginners and new members. If not sure about taking up art, come and visit the class you are interested in, talk to members over a cup of coffee or tea. Remember, most started off as complete beginners!

Varsha Manglam, artist & tutor

Varsha Manglam first came to my art class around 9 years ago. She was a keen learner and enjoyed her art from the first day, also showed great promise in the art work she produced.

I supported Varsha in her application to apply for a Fine Art Degree, at Hope university, Liverpool, and have been impressed in how she coped, also the way her painting practice developed and blossomed. She then did and succeeded in doing a MA in fine art, which saw her work develop even further.

Roy Munday, artist & tutor

I formed the Sefton Art Group nearly 20 years ago, after graduating from a fine art degree at Liverpool’s John Moores university.

I was asked to start an art class by Sefton council at Hightown. After the financial crisis of 2008, I took over the running of the class from the council  and over the years I’ve added more classes to the group, making it now one of the biggest art groups providing art classes in the north west of England.

Weekly Online Classes

We run online evening art classes over Zoom:

The online art classes are £12 per session, with recordings available for those unable to attend live.  Our Zoom art classes are stand-alone, focusing on different styles and types of artwork, mostly using watercolour or acrylics.

These classes are open to all and do not follow a specific teaching program.

Saturday Classes

On the first Saturday of each month, we run a life drawing class, 10 am – 3 pm, with a fee of £35 per class. We utilise a diverse range of male and female models. No prior experience is necessary, but the class is limited to individuals 18 years of age and older.

The second Saturday of each month brings our semi-abstraction to abstraction class. This runs from 10 am to 3:30 pm, and the fee for these classes is £30 per session.

The Saturday classes are held in Lydiate Parish Hall and the price includes refreshments. Bring your lunch.

    Sunday Classes

This class offers you the opportunity to take your journey towards semi-abstraction and abstraction. Intended to show members how they can take this journey on a well-structured course, yet flexible enough to allow for individual choices. Working this way gives you complete freedom as an artist. There are no restrictions; there is no right or wrong way of doing it. It’s simply a matter of your creativity, but often this needs to be nurtured.

The fee for this class, which runs on the second Sunday of each month in Lydiate Parish Hall, is £35 per session. Refreshments are included. Bring your lunch.

Our Members are Encouraged to Exhibit Their Work

Our next exhibition at Lydiate parish hall is the weekend of November Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th 2025. An opportunity to meet local artists and to purchase their art work. Plus, if ever you’ve thought of taking up art, come along and find out more. Speak th those who have done it.

As a member of the Sefton Art Group, we will encourage and support you in exhibiting your work. Over time, most of our members have sold a painting. Some members enjoy regular sales, as well as commissioned work. In addition to our biannual art exhibitions, members are encouraged to participate in other local exhibitions, such as the Southport Palette Club exhibition, which is held annually. Members have had success selling here, and we also have our own dedicated wall space for exhibiting members’ work. Several of our members also exhibit in the prestigious Atkinson Gallery space in Southport, and one has recently exhibited at the West Lancashire Open exhibition held at the Chapel Gallery in Ormskirk, Lancashire.
